Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has penned a poignant tribute to Diogo Jota following his fatal car crash.



The Reds forward was involved in a tragic accident with his brother Andre Silva in the Spanish province of Zamora.



Spain’s Civil Guard believe that a tyre blowout occurred whilst their vehicle was overtaking another car, causing the two to veer off of the road and crash.

The vehicle then caught fire and the brothers both tragically died.

The heartbreaking news has sent shockwaves through the footballing world and countless tributes have poured in.

Ex-Reds defender Carragher penned a touching piece for the Telegraph in which he made clear the player's legacy.

He wrote: “For Diogo Jota’s life to be cut short is a tragedy beyond comprehension.

Like everyone who had the pleasure to watch him, or was fortunate enough to meet him, it is difficult to find the right words to express how devastating his death is.

“The sporting world will mourn how an athlete at the peak of his career, who should have been savouring the greatest professional and personal moments of his life, has been lost in such unimaginable circumstances.”

Carragher went on to speak of how Jota was enjoying an incredible period in his life, winning the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal before tying the knot with his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso just two weeks earlier.

He continued: “We think of footballers at the top of their game as invincible.

“The Liverpool and Portugal players and staff will feel like they have lost a brother, while supporters of all his clubs and in his own nation will mourn because they savour the impact he had on their lives and how much Diogo meant to them.

“In many respects, I saw Diogo as the epitome of the modern Liverpool, signed as a youngster of tremendous potential who elevated himself and all those around him whenever he played.”

Carragher concluded his touching piece by insisting that supporters at both club and international level will need to be afforded time to get to grips with the ‘cruel reality that he will never have the chance to create more wonderful football memories’.
