Diogo Jota's parents did all they could to ensure the Liverpool star was able to live out his dream of being a professional football player.
On Thursday, it was announced that the 28-year-old tragically died in a single-car accident in Spain, alongside his brother Andre Silva, after the star was advised not to fly.
In an interview with the BBC some time before his death, Jota shared the sacrifices his parents made to ensure he could live out his dream of being among the best players in the world.
"I remember that was the hardest thing for me because I could see their struggle to get the money in the club and I think that caused me a debt that I will never pay them back, but obviously I tried to do that.
"In the end, each situation that you go through, it's like we spoke before, it's an experience that you need to learn from it and when you are facing those kind of difficulties, I think that makes you a better person in the end."
Jota also said that his parents instilled in him a mindset of perseverance, regardless of what happened as he made his way through European football.
"Mainly to not give up, I think, even when we are, like I was, playing in very low divisions.
Rest in peace - Love, J."
Current Liverpool manager Arne Slot released a lengthy statement: "The last time we spoke, I congratulated Diogo on winning the Nations League and wished him luck for his forthcoming wedding
