Diogo Jota's wife attends Ballon d'Or ceremony as former Liverpool star given special tribute

The life and career of former Liverpool player Diogo Jota was honoured with a heartfelt tribute at Monday night's Ballon d'Or ceremony, with his widow Rute Cardoso in attendance at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

Tragically, on July 3, Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a car accident while travelling through the Zamora region of Northern Spain.

Since then, there has been an overwhelming outpouring of love for the two footballers, as well as support for their family and former colleagues.



The latest act of remembrance came during the Ballon d'Or awards ceremony, where a touching tribute and message were delivered to the Liverpool star's family.

"This summer the football family was left in shock when we learned of the passing of Diogo Jota, who lost his life alongside his brother, Andre Silva," said host Kate Scott.

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit added: "Jota was a fan favourite who gave everything for his club and his nation, and was loved by his teammates, and supporters.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes was also present, as were Van Dijk and Alisson.

The skipper secured the 28th spot in the top 30 for the Ballon d'Or, which was announced hours prior to the ceremony, while the goalkeeper was nominated for the Yashin Trophy for the best men's goalkeeper of 2025.

Mohamed Salah was still in the race for the main award with the top 10 set to be revealed live during the ceremony.
