Liverpool’s pursuit of Wirtz has dominated the early summer transfer window, with the Premier League champions submitting two bids for the Leverkusen star.

The latest offer, a structured package worth up to £109 million, was rejected by the Bundesliga club, which insists on a €150 million (£126 million) valuation.

However, wide-spread reports indicate a compromise is expected imminently, with Liverpool prepared to meet Leverkusen halfway at approximately £120 million.

Reds fans got to see their No.1 target in action last night as Germany fell to a 2-1 defeat to Portugal.

Although he scored and certainly impressed most Liverpool fans the German media was much harsher with the 22-year-old.

While Leverkusen and Liverpool finalize the financial framework, Wirtz has dropped unmistakable hints about his future.

When approached by journalists in the mixed zone after the game, the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele asked Wirtz directly if he was excited about joining Liverpool, receiving what appeared to be a confirming nod from the player.

This marked the first time Wirtz had acknowledged the transfer speculation so directly, suggesting confidence that the deal will be completed.

Earlier in the week, Wirtz also took to Instagram to address claims about his potential shirt number at Liverpool, posting:

“Who says I want the 10.

Don’t believe everything what’s written”.

Now German national team sporting director Rudi Völler has seemingly confirmed that the player is Anfield bound:

“It’s no secret that he’d like to go to Liverpool.

I know the clubs are negotiating with each other,” he said to DAZN ahead of the clash with Portugal.

“[But with] transfers like this [it’s] often the case that it takes a while until an agreement is finally reached.

Of course, in the end, you have the feeling it will go through.”

“Florian Wirtz has proven that he’s a very, very valuable player.
