Crystal Palace were let down by some fans interrupting a minute’s silence held for Liverpool legend Diogo Jota before the Community Shield.
Ex-PGMOL chief and FIFA official Keith Hackett told Football Insider that Crystal Palace could lose the respect of fans around the world after the actions of a handful of supporters at Wembley, as the Eagles defeated Liverpool 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
The Reds and Palace contested the 2025 Community Shield as respective Premier League and FA Cup winners last season, with the Eagles appearing in this fixture for the very first time in their history.
Liverpool have paid tribute to Jota in every fixture they’ve played since the Portuguese forward’s tragic passing in a car accident alongside his brother Andre Silva on 3 July, and did so again at Wembley with their end of the stadium covered in ‘JOTA 20’ shirts and banners.

This article contains exclusive comments from ex-PGMOL chief, FIFA official and former professional referee Keith Hackett.
Liverpool and Palace’s players observed the minute’s silence on the halfway line, only for jeers from the Palace end to result in referee Chris Kavanagh blowing his whistle to bring the tribute to an early end.

Arne Slot’s side paid an ideal tribute to Jota once the match had kicked off with new signing Hugo Ekitike scoring after just four minutes, only for Jean-Philippe Mateta to equalise from the penalty spot.
Within just three minutes, another new signing found the net as Jeremie Frimpong looped an improbable shot over Dean Henderson, putting Liverpool 2-1 up with a goal that fitting came in the 20th minute.
Palace seized the initiative in the second half and equalised through Ismaila Sarr with 13 minutes left on the clock, forcing a penalty shoot-out which Palace won 3-2 after two Dean Henderson saves.
Boos rang out from Liverpool fans at the other end of Wembley after Kavanagh’s decision to cut the tribute short, and Hackett didn’t hold back in his view of the Palace supporters who had chosen to jeer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former FIFA referee was asked if the actions of a handful of Palace supporters could have further ramifications for Oliver Glasner‘s side in the form of an FA charge.
“It is frankly disgraceful that the minute’s silence to honour Diogo Jota was not observed by so-called Crystal Palace fans”, Hackett told Football Insider.
“The club lose respect by these actions in the eyes of fans around the world.”
However, Hackett did admit that “it will be difficult for The FA to issue a sanction [to Crystal Palace].”
On opting for a minute’s applause instead of silence going forward, he added: “Yes I think that should be the approach in the future.”
