Djibril Cisse has told Hugo Ekitike he "would've been crazy" to have turned down Liverpool advances.

But the former Reds striker has warned his French compatriot he now has to justify his near £80m price tag at Anfield.

Liverpool thrashed out terms with Eintracht Frankfurt over the weekend to put Ekitike on the brink of a deal that will be worth an initial £69m with a further £10m in success-based add-ons.

The 23-year-old underwent a medical in London on Tuesday and is expected to link up with his new team-mates in Hong Kong once officially confirmed as a Reds player.

And Cisse has likened Ekitike to his former Anfield colleague Peter Crouch and challenged the Reds new noy to show why such faith has been shown in him by the key decision makers on Merseyside.

“He would’ve been crazy not to go,” Cisse told L’Equipe.

“Now he has to perform.

At Liverpool, maybe some came too young or weren’t ready.

“But one day, one of us will break through and set the tone.”

Ekitike is poised to become the club's seventh signing of the summer after agreements for Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and goalkeeping trio Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman and Armin Pecsi.

Earlier this week, Cisse's former France international team-mate Frank Leboeuf said of Ekitike in a clash with Liverpool legend Steve Nicol: “I’m happy for Hugo, for sure, I really hope he’s going to serve Liverpool in the best way and be good enough according to the price that has been paid.

I really hope he does well but wait and see.

They were warned by the Nunez transfer and now they're doing the same with Ekitike.

He’s been absolutely fantastic and was tremendous last season, but Liverpool and the Premier League is another story, so wait and see.”
