Rangers scored late to rescue a 1-1 draw against Dundee on Saturday (9 August) in Russell Martin’s first league game in charge at Ibrox.
Martin’s men started the stronger of the two sides, but were unable to make their early chances count as Joe Rothwell and star man Djeidi Gassama each fired shots wide of Jon McCracken’s goal.
Dundee were good value for a point at the interval after some resolute defending, and they got their noses in front in the 52nd minute as Ryan Astley nodded past Jack Butland to give the visitors the lead.
The Gers’ supporters became increasingly irate at their players’ lack of desire to find an equaliser, and things went from bad to worse in the 59th minute as Nasser Djiga saw red for a last-man tackle on Finlay Robertson.
10-men Rangers were unable to muster enough chances in the latter stages of the game to find a leveller, but were handed a lifeline as Gassama won a penalty in added-time and James Tavernier converted to snatch a point.
Cyriel Dessers thought he had won the game for Rangers in the 97th minute, but his strike was chalked off by VAR for offside, and it ended 1-1.
MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES
Jack Butland – 5
Shaky.
Another of the hosts’ backline who never looked sure when the visitors lofted crosses into the penalty area, and his lacklustre showing was compounded by a headless last-man foul that was a clear sending off and made it even harder for Rangers to get back into the game.
John Souttar – 5
Quiet showing from the Scottish international when his side really needed a voice and a leader to drag them out of the mire.
Joe Rothwell – 5
Rothwell did not do enough in the middle of the park to dictate the tempo of the game and get Rangers on the front foot enough.
Another lacklustre showing in midfield and he was duly hooked off in the 56th minute with just one ground duel won, no successful dribbles and no accurate crosses made.
Lyall Cameron – 6
Played positively and always wanted to get forward, but simply did not do enough and was shoved off the ball too easily by Dundee’s unwelcoming defenders.
Djeidi Gassama – 7 – Player of the Match
Made things happen all game, as he has in every appearance of his short Gers career so far.
Thought he had won it at the death but was clearly offside.
Substitutes
Kieran Dowell (on for Cameron 56?) – 5
Dowell was greeted with a chorus of boos when he stepped onto the pitch for Rangers, and he played about as well as could be expected after it, with mostly misplaced passes and crosses on show in his cameo.
Nico Raskin (on for Diomande 56?) – 5
Tried a lot but nothing came off, and mostly sat deep behind the play to try and place passes, which was largely to no avail.
Danilo (on for Aarons 64?) – 5
Had 10 touches in his 33 minutes on the pitch, which effectively sums up his Gers career right now.
He duly dispatched his penalty despite the pressure of the occasion and how late it was in the game.
Findlay Curtis (on for Jefte 77?) – 6
The youngster put himself about and did well as Rangers looked a better team with him in it.
