Dominik Szoboszlai has been speaking frankly on his debut Liverpool season as it draws to its conclusion.

The Hungarian was arguably the cream of the crop of the signings made by Jorg Schmadtke and co.

The Reds were happy to fork over the £60 million release clause to allow RB Leipzig to let go of their man.

At first, Dominik Szoboszlai took to Anfield like a duck to water.

He scored a fantastic half-volley against Aston Villa in September before following that up with an absolute rocket against Leicester City in the EFL Cup.

However, after the Steven Gerrard comparisons died down, the 23-year-old has struggled to take his strong start into the rest of the season.

The midfielder has participated in 43 matches in various competitions, netting seven goals and providing three assists.

While has not played as a pure number 10, we can expect a little more from the Hungarian – who normally plays in the advanced eight role in Jurgen Klopp’s system.

His drop-off could also be explained by the fact that he got injured around New Years, and suffered reoccurrences of the same hamstring injury since the initial stress tear.

The midfielder missed more than a month’s worth of action between January and February totaling 12 games, and then did not return the same player.

In light of this, he has now spoken about his experiences at Anfield this season.

What did Dominik Szoboszlai say?

Speaking to MLSZ TV, the Hungarian skipper revealed that perhaps he set the bar too high for his debut season in the Premier League and indeed Liverpool:

“Perhaps I set the bar too high because I think there were certain matches where I couldn’t bring out the best in myself,” he began.

“Or there are times when you don’t play well and in some people’s eyes you’re the worst player on the pitch, but it is not a problem because we get through these things together.”

He also highlighted the difference between the Premier League and the Bundesliga, saying:

“The [Premier League] is quicker, here you don’t have as much time to think as in the Bundesliga.

“Here you really need to know what you’d like to do with the ball before you receive it because if you don’t, you pretty much have no chance.”

There is no doubt that Dominik Szoboszlai can become an iconic player for Liverpool.

Although he did fade towards the end of this season, he is still only 23 playing his first Premier League season.

It should only be a matter of time until the Steven Gerrard comparisons comeback, because Dominik Szoboszlai is just that good.
