Players switch shirts, but the expectations remain high.
Hungary now faces a crucial World Cup qualifier in Dublin against the Republic of Ireland.
It is the kind of game that can shape a campaign.
Portugal are the clear favourites in the group, which means Hungary and Ireland are most likely fighting for second place and a playoff spot.
For Liverpool fans, there is also an added layer of interest.
Dominik Szoboszlai has been in superb form at Anfield, even playing in an unusual role for his club recently.
With his performances under Arne Slot catching the eye, supporters have been curious about how Hungary might use him this weekend.
Marco Rossi, Hungary’s head coach, has given his answer.
Speaking before the game, he made it clear he will not copy Liverpool’s recent experiment of playing Szoboszlai at right-back.
“I don’t think so, to be honest,” Rossi via RTE Sport, said when asked if he might do the same.
He explained his thinking further: “We will employ him – I do not like this word ‘use’
You cannot ‘use’ persons.”
“We will employ him in the position which is more comfortable for him and more useful for us.”
Rossi also spoke about the challenge of the group.
“In our group, Portugal are on another level, even if we will try our best in every match that we will play,” he admitted.
“But of course looking at the second place, I think that the fight could be between us and Ireland.”
“I am expecting a match that tomorrow will be balanced and will be probably decided by episodes and we have to do everything in order to bring these episodes on our side.”
From a Liverpool perspective, the comments bring relief.
Szoboszlai has impressed filling in at full-back for Arne Slot against Newcastle and Arsenal, even scoring a stunning free-kick nominated for Goal of the Month.
However, Rossi believes his captain is too important in midfield to be shifted.
As Ireland’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, another familiar Liverpool name, pointed out this week, “I know him quite well from Liverpool and one of his biggest threats is his shooting ability, so for sure I think we need to limit that on Saturday.”
“He’s a really good guy, a good player and one we need to be aware of.”
On Szoboszlai’s strike against Arsenal, Kelleher added, “I think it was probably a nearly perfect free-kick.”
“The way he strikes the ball, he puts a lot of different movement on the football.”
“Maybe you don’t see it to the naked eye, but certainly as a goalkeeper you can see it.”
