Dominik Szoboszlai has spoken about the impending arrival of Florian Wirtz this summer.
The 22-year-old has agreed a deal worth up to £116 million to join from Bayer Leverkusen.
Renowned for his spatial intelligence and incisive passing, Wirtz excels as a playmaker who thrives in the attacking third, often creating more chances per 90 minutes than any Premier League midfielder this past season.
Since his arrival in 2023, Szoboszlai was initially viewed as a high G/A No.
10, expected to unlock defences with long-range strikes and threading passes.
However, Slot has increasingly deployed him in a deeper, box-to-box role where his engine and pressing prowess shine.
It’s starting to become clear that Szoboszlai is never going to be the archetype No.10, running a game and scoring goals and getting assists at will.
As quoted by oghuncrew, Szoboszlai was quizzed on whether he feels that his place in the starting XI will be under threat following the arrival of Florian Wirtz, with the 24-year-old was emphatic in response:
“Well, if you say that my situation will be made more difficult, then let’s wait and see what happens after pre-season,” he said.
“In the end, you might be right, but I don’t give up my place that easily and I think he knows that getting into a Premier League-winning team takes work.”
When probed further on whether he was afraid of Wirtz’s arrival, the Hungarian said:
“No, No?
Of course, if they buy a player for €150 million, it’s likely that they won’t keep him on the bench, but then we have to find the opportunity for the two of us to play together.”
Liverpool’s pre-season begins on July 8 when the squad reconvenes at the AXA Training Centre.
The opening pre-season game is against Preston North End later that week on 13 July.
It will be interesting to see how Slot integrates both players during the pre-season.
