Union Berlin sporting director Oliver Ruhnert insists that the club will be paying less than has been claimed to sign Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi from Liverpool.

It has been suggested that Liverpool have bagged a fee of €7.5m from the forward’s sale, but Ruhnert insisted that Union Berlin do not have such funds to spend on a single player this summer.

Awoniyi spent last season on loan at Union Berlin and the Bundesliga side signed him on a permanent deal from Liverpool on Tuesday.

Liverpool need money from sales in order to sign further players in the ongoing transfer window.

The German deal-maker also stressed that Awoniyi chose to return to Union Berlin despite having several other options on his table.

Ruhnert told German magazine Kicker: “We do not sign players who cost €7.5m.

“[He had] enough other options, not least in the Bundesliga.” It remains to be seen the actual fee Liverpool managed to bag from the striker’s sale this summer turns out to be.
