'Door is still open': Liverpool could be about to do something enormous in the transfer market again - journalist

Liverpool have spent big so far this summer but still require a few more additions.

The Reds are at the pinnacle of English football but staying there is the hardest job of them all, especially given the strength of opposition close to them.

Rivals are also bolstering their squad and making it as tricky as possible for Arne Slot’s side to retain the title, although many would argue that Liverpool have done it best so far in the transfer window.

Despite spending approximately £146m on Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, plus soon-to-be another £40m on Milos Kerkez, the Reds still have money at their disposal.

A striker appears to be their top priority and Alexander Isak is the dream target who they desperately want, even if many think it is unlikely.

However, Liverpool have proven time and time again how they are capable of producing a shock, and they have shown that there is a strong possibility they could sign the Swede this summer.

The Reds are wily operators in the market and only buy when they need to, suggesting that when they go big, it is for a very obvious reason.

This is something they have done in the past too and journalist Darren Lewis was keen to reference this when speaking to talkSPORT, indicating that they might be about to pull off another shock.

“Yes I could [see Isak moving to Liverpool], only because when they needed a centre-half to solve their problems, they waited for van Dijk and paid £75m for him, and at the time there was a sharp intake of breath around him,” Lewis said.

“But, he’s absolutely done what they expected him to do.

When they needed to solve a problem in goal, again, £70m on Alisson, again he’s been outstanding.

“Now they have two more issues to solve and Darwin Nunez wasn’t the one, but Alexander Isak absolutely could be.”

Lewis concluded by saying: “The key thing for me, with Isak you have to listen to what footballers are saying and at no point has he said ‘I don’t want to go anywhere else.'”

“He has indeed [kept his own powder dry], and that to me is why that door is still open, and I think if Liverpool were to make that move even at the numbers they are talking about, I think we could see something.”

Either way, whether Liverpool decide to try for Isak or not, they are in desperate need of a striker.

The Reds have been far too reliant on Mohamed Salah for goals, and signing a striker who can get 20+ a season would really relieve the pressure on the Egyptian’s shoulders.

Although he shows no signs of slowing down, there is a strong possibility that Salah will depart when his contract expires in 2027, indicating that Liverpool need to find an alternative source of goals sooner rather than later.

Hugo Ekitike is another name linked to Liverpool and so is Victor Osimhen, although both would cost more than they are likely willing to pay considering they are not their first-choice options.

Saving money for Isak for the future may also be a good idea, but in the meantime, the Reds need to find at least a ‘stop-gap’ striker to fill in before the Swede could join.
