The summer break has not yet begun for many Liverpool stars, as national team duties continue to take centre stage.
In fact, the Netherlands’ latest World Cup qualifier had a familiar feel for Reds fans — all four Dutch players from the Liverpool squad started against Finland.
Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and new signing Jeremie Frimpong were all handed starting roles by Ronald Koeman.
For Frimpong, it was the first real opportunity for Liverpool fans to watch him in action since his move from Bayer Leverkusen.
The Netherlands won the game comfortably, but the real story for many watching back home on Merseyside was how each of Liverpool’s players performed, especially with Arne Slot now in charge and looking for signs of sharpness heading into pre-season.
And the Dutch media were quick to weigh in on the Reds’ performances — handing out their player ratings and match notes after the final whistle.
From Voetbal International, Virgil van Dijk received the highest score among the Liverpool group with a 7.5.
They wrote that he “led the defense with sovereignty.”
Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch both earned a 7, with VI praising Gakpo’s first-half impact and Gravenberch’s partnership with Frenkie de Jong.
Jeremie Frimpong scored 6 out of 10.
Both Voetbal International and AD gave the new Liverpool man a similar review.
AD said: “He did great against Spain in de Kuip, but excelling in that way against the defensive Finns is of course impossible.” He “gave a great cross from the left to Dumfries who headed the full-back wide” and also “missed a header opportunity himself.”
Still, AD praised Frimpong’s work ethic, noting that he is “constantly alert defensively” and “does the pressing on the highest podium.”
For Gravenberch, AD added that he “turns away where he wants, accelerates the game when necessary and forms a great couple with Frenkie de Jong.”
Van Dijk was described as never in trouble — “an evening stroll,” they wrote.
As for Gakpo, AD highlighted his “great first half” and that he “was at the basis of the strong start of the Dutch team.”
Four Liverpool players started.
Plenty for Slot to think about.
