Dutch footballer Mark Diemers drew comparisons between Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and incoming Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

Liverpool and Feyenoord have reached an agreement for a £9.4 million compensation package for Slot to succeed Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

Some may consider Liverpool’s decision-makers to be taking a bold step, given that the 45-year-old has not yet managed a top-tier European team.

However, Diemers’ firsthand experiences with Slot during his tenure at Feyenoord, which coincided with Diemers’ own two-year stint at the club, offer promising insights for Reds fans.

The midfielder also played under Ten Hag at Utrecht for a season.

When questioned about the finest manager he had ever worked under during an interview with ESPN Netherlands, Diemers revealed: “I choose Arne Slot.

“I found Ten Hag insanely good tactically, so were his training sessions.

“I just didn’t think he was very good, at that time, on a human level.

I thought Slot was a lot stronger on a human level.

“Look at what kind of clubs [Ten Hag] has worked at, so he must also have qualities on a human level.

He will undoubtedly have grown on a human level as well.”

Slot is set to be appointed as Liverpool’s new head coach, marking a departure from the traditional British football club structure as Anfield prepares for the change.

The Dutchman is anticipated to be content with that status, given his coaching experience aligns with the head coach/sporting director model.

Slot is set to succeed Jurgen Klopp, who announced his departure from Anfield at the end of the 2023-24 season back in January.

He led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in the 2022-23 season and this season, they have secured the Dutch Cup and are on track to finish second in their league.

Slot will be joined at Anfield by Sipke Hulshoff, his assistant coach at Feyenoord, as well as Ruben Peeters, their head of performance.

Liverpool’s decision to appoint Slot is believed to be influenced by his attacking style of play, his leadership qualities, and his adeptness at player development.

Slot assumed the role of Feyenoord manager in 2021 and had previously expressed interest in managing in the Premier League when he was linked with Tottenham in 2023.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who recently guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title, was also linked with the Liverpool managerial position.

However, Alonso ended speculation in March by announcing his decision to remain with Leverkusen for the time being.

Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon was another reported contender for Klopp’s successor, but the club ultimately opted for Slot to take over the reins.
