Liverpool have 10 players that will be representing their nations at Euro 2024 this summer, with four South Amercian starts also bound for the USA for the Copa America.
It is set to be a summer full of international football, with over a month of premier tournament football to look forward to.
Although many Liverpool fans will already be keen to start the season under Arne Slot, it comes as a welcome break from club football for many as well.
The Netherlands played their final warm-up game before the tournament in Germany last night, with Ronald Koeman’s men’s hammering Iceland 4-0.
The former Barcelona manager has been experimenting with his side quite heavily ahead of the tournament, and it was a heavily altered line-up that also beat Canda 4-0 last week.
Gakpo did not feature against the Canadians but was granted a start against Iceland.
And judging from the reactions of the national Dutch media, Gakpo may struggle to start at Euro 2024 this summer.
How did Cody Gakpo perform against Iceland?
The Reds have plenty of Dutchman heading to Germany this summer, with skipper Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch also making the sqaud.
While van Dijk is a nailed on starter, Ryan Gravenberch was told he was lucky by manager Koeman – and could also struggle to get into the starting eleven for Netherlands’ first group stage game against Poland.
Van Dijk registered a goal as Gakpo completed 75 minutes before being replaced by Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen, and Gravenberch was not used.
The former PSV man seemed to pick up some criticism from the Dutch national media.
Voetbel Primeur gave Gakpo a 5/10 and gave a rather scathing assessment:
“Gakpo could not demonstrate that Koeman has no way around him.
Keeping a player mascot warm during the Wilhelmus by giving away his training jacket was his best action of the evening.”
Dutch outlet AD claimed that Cody Gakpo will have a hard time ‘shaking off the competition’ to be a starter in Germany, writing:
“A few times, Gakpo sniffed a goal against the Icelanders.
The Liverpool forward showed himself.
If you want to play a leading role in the national team, you have to shake off tough competition.”
Meanwhile Football Oranje gave the Liverpool man a 6/10 – the joint lowest rating they gave – and wrote:
“Went close a couple of times but a quiet game overall for the Liverpool man.”
So, it seems that Gakpo may not be a nailed on starter for Koeman this summer, despiste his excellent performances in the 2022 World Cup.
But things change quickly in football, and the 25-year-old is resolute enough to turn the situation around.
