One of Diogo Jota's earliest coaches was unsurprisingly reduced to tears at the news of the player's passing.

The soccer world was left stunned on Thursday when it was confirmed that Liverpool forward Jota had died alongside his younger brother in a car crash in Spain.

The pair were travelling to the Santander ferry port ahead of catching a boat to Portsmouth, from where they were going to make the five-hour journey north to Merseyside.

According to reports in Portugal, Jota had been advised against flying by medics after recently undergoing a lung operation.

Jota was due to return to pre-season training with Liverpool on Monday (July 7) ahead of the Reds' opening 2025-26 warm-up game against Preston North End six days later.

Nuno Campos, who worked with Jota at Pacos de Ferreira — the club the late forward began his senior career at — told the Daily Mail's Nathan Salt: "I was shocked to hear the news this morning when I was going to train.

"My reaction was to cry.

It was a relative who raised the alarm when the brothers failed to arrive in Benavente, and subsequent checks on the documentation of the deceased confirmed they were Portuguese nationals.

A Liverpool Football Club statement issued on Thursday said: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss!

I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre.

"Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father
