Arsenal are running out of time to sign Eberechi Eze after he led Crystal Palace to another piece of silverware.

Crystal Palace have held firm on their stance regarding Eze’s future this summer and have so far been able to keep hold of their number 10, as well as other exit-linked stars in Adam Wharton and Marc Guehi.

Arsenal and Tottenham have been locked in a race to bring Eze to North London, and Football Insider revealed on 11 August that Arsenal are the current front-runners to sign the Crystal Palace playmaker.

Former Man United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider last month that Arsenal were still weighing up whether to pay Eze’s £68million release clause, but that clause was believed to have since expired.

However, Alex Crook reported via X on Tuesday that Eze‘s release clause is still active and will only expire on Friday (15 August), giving Arsenal and Tottenham renewed hope in their shared efforts to sign him.

Eze has not actively pushed for a move away from Selhurst Park this summer despite those links to both Arsenal and Tottenham, and his stock as a Crystal Palace legend has continued to rise as a result.

Palace picked up their second piece of silverware in 86 days with victory over Liverpool in Sunday’s Community Shield at Wembley, winning 3-2 on penalties after coming back to draw 2-2 in normal time.

Eze wore the armband for the shoot-out after Marc Guehi’s late injury, and after the latter hoisted the shield, Eddie Nketiah posted on Instagram (11 August) with a celebratory message to Palace fans.

In a post liked by Eze and several of his team-mates, Nketiah said: “South LDN take over Wembley!”

Football Insider Verdict

Nketiah missed out on the matchday squad for Palace’s Community Shield victory due to injury; the latest in a series of setbacks for the ex-Arsenal striker after his £30m move to Selhurst Park last summer.

Eze could be set for a move in the opposite direction, but Arsenal face a potentially final decision on this transfer saga with just days until that £68m release clause expires and leads to a potential price hike.

Tottenham are ready to step up their own interest in Eze after James Maddison‘s ACL injury, leaving the onus on Arsenal to finalise a deal for the 27-year-old and finally fill their vacancy in the number 10 shirt.
