Liverpool’s hoped-for acquisition of Alexander Isak remains in limbo as the Reds await confirmation that Newcastle United have secured a replacement before sanctioning the Sweden international’s move to Anfield.

Isak, who has been publicly absent from training and sat out Newcastle’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa, is reportedly facing fines after refusing to join the squad for competitive fixtures.

The 25-year-old has missed the entirety of pre-season training in protest over Newcastle rejecting Liverpool’s initial bid, creating tension within Eddie Howe’s ranks and pushing the transfer saga to crisis point.

Newcastle’s transfer strategy hinges on bringing in fresh attacking options to offset Isak’s departure, but their pursuit of Yoane Wissa from Brentford has hit repeated roadblocks.

The Bees have rebuffed several approaches, insisting any deal must meet a valuation north of £60 million and refusing to entertain negotiations unless the figure is met in full.

Brentford’s stance remains firm despite Wissa’s age (28) and only having one year left on his contract (although there is an option to extend it by a further season).

With just days left in the window, Liverpool finds themselves in a holding pattern of sorts.

Now Eddie Howe has spoken about Newcastle’s plans for the rest of the window, and has confirmed that the Geordie side still plans to bring in one or two players:

“We are still active in the window and we’d love to add one or two players but it really is quality over quantity,” said Howe as quoted by the Chronicle.

“We don’t want to just add and I don’t think we need to do too much more.

I feel we will be stronger once we have our full complement of players available.”

The fact that Newcastle are still active in the window can only come as a boost to Liverpool’s chances of landing Alexander Isak.

Should Wissa make the move to St James’ Park, perhaps Reds fans could start seriously dreaming.

However, Arne Slot and Co

can’t wait forever for the Swedish international, and a resolution needs to be found soon.
