The future of star striker Alexander Isak has taken center stage, with manager Eddie Howe offering his clearest comments yet on what could be the Magpies’ biggest transfer decision in years.
Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, was left out of the club’s pre-season trip to Singapore.
But the timing of Liverpool’s interest, paired with Isak’s own desire to “explore his options,” has turned up the temperature on Tyneside.
Ahead of a friendly against Arsenal, Howe addressed the swirling rumours (quotes via The Athletic).

“Of course there are things going on behind the scenes,” Howe told reporters.
“Conversations that happen between Alex and myself and Alex and the club will stay private.
There are no contract talks taking place.”
That might not scream ‘transfer incoming’, but it certainly doesn’t rule it out either.
Howe admitted it was his choice to keep Isak out of their recent friendly against Celtic, citing the ongoing uncertainty.
It’s football, who knows what the future may bring.”
While Newcastle continue to say the Swede is not for sale, Howe acknowledged that final decisions rest with the board, especially when massive offers are involved.
But losing Isak would be a major blow — and finding someone to match his quality won’t be easy.
The ball’s in Newcastle’s court, but Isak may be ready to kick off elsewhere.
