Newcastle and Eddie Howe could be set for a huge boost in their desire to keep Tino Livramento following a new update on Rico Lewis’ contract situation at Man City.

Livramento has emerged as one of the best young full-backs in the world since his move to Newcastle from Southampton in 2023 for an initial £32million [BBC] fee.

He signed a five-year contract upon his arrival at St James’ Park, and Chelsea supporters will feel like their club made a mistake in selling him to the Saints in 2021, given his impressive form in the two years since.

The 22-year-old’s strong showings in the last campaign has seen him linked away from Tyneside, with former scout Mick Brown revealing to Football Insider in July that Man City are set to step up their interest in Livramento as Pep Guardiola aims to bring in a new right-back following Kyle Walker’s exit.

Football Insider revealed on 6 July that Newcastle are doing all they can to try and keep Livramento right now, and they may be on their way to doing so after a new development emerged around fellow England right-back Lewis’ future at the Etihad Stadium.

According to the Daily Mail (20 August), 20-year-old Lewis is set to sign a new five-year contract at Man City after negotiations over an extension accelerated quickly following his good performance against Wolves on Saturday (16 August).

Lewis has been targeted by Nottingham Forest in recent weeks, with the City Ground outfit reportedly willing to double his City wages to complete a move this summer, but he will now be remaining at the Etihad Stadium if a new deal is soon finalised.

That would, in turn, surely end their interest in Livramento for now, with Lewis and the versatile Matheus Nunes seemingly set to be City’s right-back options for the campaign ahead.

Newcastle will be hugely relieved at the increased likelihood of being able to keep the former Saints star, as he is due to be key to any success they may have this season, and they have already suffered enough throughout this summer.

Howe has had to deal with the club being unable to land a number of his main transfer targets so far, such as Hugo Ekitike, Bryan Mbeumo, James Trafford and Liam Delap, while star man Alexander Isak desperately wants out, and so keeping Livramento would serve as a big boost in the face of numerous setbacks.

Former scout Brown revealed to Football Insider before the season even ended that Newcastle were putting plans in place for Livramento’s exit amid interest from Man City, and that comes as no surprise based off his impressive Premier League performances in the last few years.

The 22-year-old is one of the most promising young players in his position across world football, and if City want to continue challenging for titles as the years go on, then bringing him in should have been made a priority in the last few months.

A move to the Etihad Stadium will obviously have appealed to the 22-year-old due to City’s status and spending power, but any deal now seems very unlikely with Lewis surely signing to become their first-choice right-back instead of him.

The Times recently reported that Newcastle are readying a six-year contract offer for the England international, and now seems as good a time as ever to approach him over an extension, with City seemingly out of the picture and no other clubs believed to be eyeing him up.
