Eddie Howe to jump at Newcastle exit offer after being misled by bosses

Thu 4 September 2025 16:30, UK

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe could soon walk away into another top job after he was told the wrong information about Alexander Isak by the club’s higher-ups.

Newcastle have finally emerged out of the transfer window with a decent squad, but their summer was not without its setbacks and shortcomings during a turbulent few months for all involved.

Eddie Howe has been in charge at St James’ Park since 2021, and has helped the club go from relegation-battlers to Champions League regulars, while he also led them to long-awaited cup glory in the Carabao Cup last term.

Despite the positivity around the club at the end of last season after their successful campaign, Newcastle missed out on a number of top targets throughout the summer and were rocked by Alexander Isak’s desire to leave to join Liverpool.

Isak was able to seal his dream move to Liverpool late on in the window, while the Magpies were eventually able to sign replacements like Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa among other big signings, yet some poor communication between Howe and the board could leave to his departure sooner rather than later.

Isak revolted at Newcastle and did not take part in any of their first three Premier League games amid his continued desire to leave, but according to a report from The Athletic (1 September), Howe was told all along that the club would be able to keep Isak by those immediately above him in the hierarchy.

As such he backed himself to overcome the situation and reintegrate his star man, while heading off regular questioning about the matter.

This obviously proved not to be the case, and despite Howe choosing not to publicly speak out against the Swedish striker, he would have been left reeling when the move was completed on deadline day, after the Saudi ownership took control of the matter.

Such a high-profile failure could lead him to think about leaving, especially after Football Insider revealed in July that Newcastle’s owners believed Howe was partly to blame for their poor summer window.

They may well be planning to sack him at some point soon, as a result, but the former Bournemouth boss could instead jump ship before being relieved of his duties to keep hold of his reputation.

Football Insider revealed last year that Howe would love to manage England at some point in the future, but he was not considered for the job after Gareth Southgate’s exit.

Current Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel has been tipped to take over at Man United before the World Cup amid Ruben Amorim’s struggles, however, and so that job could be open for Howe to take soon.

Football Insider recently revealed that Howe was “devastated” to have missed out on signing Joao Pedro earlier in the summer, and the way they missed out on numerous top players will have disheartened him despite belatedly bringing in the likes of Woltemade and Wissa.

With that said, any approach from a top European side is surely something that he would jump at, and his achievements in charge of Newcastle should put him in the running for most jobs that become available in the near future.

Howe has been under pressure at Newcastle ever since his appointment, with the remit of their Saudi owners being to consistently get the club into the Champions League and to also go on and possibly challenge for the Premier League title.

That has been made a lot harder by a tough summer in which their best player kicked up a fuss and jumped ship, and their setbacks have been reflected on the pitch with no wins and just two goals scored in their first three Premier League games.

Howe will know not to read too much into those matches, as he was dealing with Isak’s situation and did not have a full complement of players compared to now, but the same likely cannot be said for the owners, who will already be raising their eyebrows, especially after they also failed to win any of their six pre-season outings.

The Magpies boss will be aware of the pressure on him to do well this season, even despite losing his star man, and an obvious lack of progress could lead to his exit before he is even able to consider other jobs.
