Liverpool are set to make their return to Wembley Stadium for the first time since their Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United in February.
The Reds will take on the FA Cup winners in Crystal Palace on Sunday, 10 August at 3:00pm BST, with the match broadcast exclusively live on TNT Sports.
Arne Slot’s Premier League champions head into the encounter having completed a solid if unspectacular pre-season campaign, most recently securing back-to-back victories over Athletic Club at Anfield.
Oliver Glasner’s Eagles are entering uncharted territory, having never before contested the traditional curtain-raiser, but they arrive at Wembley with confidence after a successful pre-season campaign that has seen them maintain the momentum from their record-breaking previous campaign.
Palace began their summer preparations with a 1-0 victory over South London rivals Millwall.
They continued their winning form with a convincing 3-0 triumph over Crawley Town.
The Eagles then took their preparations to Austria, where they faced more challenging opposition in Mainz and FC Augsburg.
Against Augsburg, they secured a 3-1 victory in their first encounter, with Mateta netting twice alongside Eberechi Eze, though they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in the second fixture with a more youthful lineup.
The Eagles’ preparations have been hampered by the uncertainty surrounding their European competition placement, with a Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing scheduled for Friday to determine whether they’ll compete in the Europa League or Conference League next season.
And ahead of the clash, up to eight players could be missing from both sides.
Joe Gomez – doubt
The Liverpool defender has been dealing with an Achilles problem that forced his early return from the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.
Gomez departed the tour to undergo treatment at the AXA Training Centre after experiencing discomfort during training in Hong Kong.
Manager Arne Slot confirmed that Gomez will not feature this Sunday.
Alisson – minor doubt
The Liverpool goalkeeper left the club’s Asian tour early due to a personal matter and returned to Brazil.
He has only played one game 0nly in pre-season but could yet play against the Eagles.
Conor Bradley – doubt
Liverpool’s young right-back remains sidelined with a muscle injury that has kept him out of recent pre-season fixtures.
The Northern Ireland international has endured a frustrating period with recurring fitness issues, having previously missed significant time earlier in 2025 with hamstring problems.
S
lot has indicated that Bradley’s participation in the Community Shield is also in doubt, describing the situation as “going to be tight”.
Eddie Nketiah – out
Crystal Palace have been dealt a significant blow with their striker facing approximately six weeks on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury sustained during their pre-season defeat to FC Augsburg.
The former Arsenal forward was substituted after feeling discomfort and subsequent assessments have revealed the extent of the problem.
BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel confirmed that Nketiah will miss the Community Shield and is expected to be unavailable until late September.
Cheick Doucoure – out
The Crystal Palace midfielder is facing an extended period out of action after requiring knee surgery.
Manager Oliver Glasner confirmed in January that Doucoure would miss the remainder of the 2024/25 season and expressed hope that he might return for pre-season preparations ahead of the new campaign.
However, the 25-year-old remains unavailable and his participation in the early part of the 2025/26 season remains uncertain.
Chadi Riad – out
The Crystal Palace defender has suffered the most serious injury setback among the players mentioned, with a ruptured ACL that will keep him out for an extended period.
The 22-year-old Moroccan international sustained the injury during training and is not expected to return until some point later in the 2025/26 season.
Caleb Kporha – out
Caleb Kporha is currently sidelined with a persistent back problem, the exact nature of which the club has not fully disclosed.
