Brentford appear to have gotten the better deal out of Yoane Wissa’s forced move to Newcastle United this summer.
Wissa refused to play for Brentford after an initial £25 million bid from the Magpies was turned down, stating that promises made to him behind the scenes had been broken.
With 19 goals and four assists in the Premier League last season, it was clear why clubs were interested in the 29-year-old’s signature, but the Bees had no reason to buckle over his transfer fee.
Eventually, Wissa sealed his move to Newcastle on transfer deadline day, as Alexander Isak joined Liverpool in a British transfer record, and despite losing one of their best players, Brentford may have come out on top.

Speaking about which clubs pulled off a “Harry Potter” during the transfer window, a deal so unlikely that the agent needed to pull a rabbit out of a hat, Gab Marcotti suggested Wissa to Newcastle.
“The transfer itself was not unlikely, but the way it transpired – Yoane Wissa to Newcastle United,” Gab Marcotti said while speaking on ESPN FC (6 September).
“Not that weird that he moved, but everything about the move, having one year left on his contract at 29 years old, and Newcastle made an initial offer that they thought was generous for a player his age.

“With all due respect, it’s Yoane Wissa – £25 million.
It’s a stare-down.
“In the end, Newcastle bid in excess of £55 million, which is just enormous.
He could have just sat and left on a free next summer, but they stuck to their guns and got two-and-a-half more than the initial £25 million.”
Supporters are worried for the Bees’ safety in the Premier League this season, and understandably so, having lost multiple big-name players throughout the summer months.
Bryan Mbeumo joined Man United in a blockbuster deal, and despite a lot of money being made on these transfers, Andrews has very little to work with for the 2025/26 campaign.
Reiss Nelson sealed his move on transfer deadline day, joining the club’s record arrival Dango Ouattara, who has already scored his first goal since moving from Bournemouth.
There are certainly some positive signs for the Bees, who lost some key players this summer, but it remains to be seen whether they can achieve Premier League safety with the current squad.
