Darren Bent suggests it’s no longer funny what keeps happening to Liverpool star

Darren Bent has suggested that while he is such a big fan of one Liverpool player, what he is often doing is now no longer funny.

The Reds have seen their Premier League title hopes dealt a huge blow. Of course, the 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday handed Manchester City the initiative in the race.

It was an early goal from Eberechi Eze, which presented Liverpool with more than enough time to turn the game around and get the three points. They certainly created enough chances.

Curtis Jones left Anfield stunned with his miss in the second-half. Meanwhile, both Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah were denied by amazing blocks from the Palace defence.

But there was also a miraculous Dean Henderson save from Darwin Nunez when a chance fell to the Uruguayan right on the edge of the six-yard box.

Jamie Carragher has previously suggested that Nunez does not have the ability to be the lethal finisher Liverpool hope he would be.

And speaking on talkSPORT, Darren Bent claimed that it is starting to become frustrating watching Nunez when he is spurning chances.

“I know Liverpool fans love Darwin Nunez. I like him. But some of the misses are starting to cost Liverpool. Listen, I love the things he does,” he said.

“He does so many good things. He’s running around, he works hard, he gets himself into great positions, but that last little bit of composure. At times, you can go ‘ha, it’s funny’. But it gets to a point where you start to go, alright, enough’s enough. Start putting the ball in the net.”

Interesting Erling Haaland statistic cannot be overlooked when discussing Darwin Nunez

If you were to criticise Nunez for anything, it would perhaps be that he has not made huge strides with his goalscoring since his arriving at Anfield.

Only four players are performing worse against their non-penalty expected goals, according to FBRef. So that may be a concern.

What is interesting is that the two names above Nunez are Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland. Obviously, Haaland is often held up as the best striker in the division.

It is frustrating because Nunez does offer so much. And you would not be at all surprised if he went on to have an incredible season at some point where everything seems to hit the back of the net.

But if Liverpool do miss out on the title, many will struggle to look past Nunez’s wastefulness as one of the key reasons.
