Former Liverpool full-back Joey Jones has died at the age of 70.
Jones joined his boyhood heroes in 1975 and won one league title, two European Cups and the UEFA Cup in his three years with Bob Paisley’s side.
The tough-tackling Wales international gained cult hero status at Anfield which extended to a tribute in the 1977 final with Borussia Monchengladbach.
A banner of ‘Joey ate the frogs legs, made the Swiss roll, now he’s munching Gladbach’ became one of the abiding memories from the Rome encounter.
After 100 appearances and three goals on Merseyside, Jones returned to hometown club Wrexham before spells with Chelsea and Huddersfield Town.
Former Reds striker and current chair of the club’s former players association John Aldridge confirmed his passing on Tuesday morning.
“More sad news folks Joey Jones passed away last night,” he wrote on social media.
“What a lovely man and an inspirational full back who gave his heart and soul in a red shirt and for all the clubs he played for.
“Our thoughts are with Joey’s family I’m a lucky man to have met him many times.
“YNWA RIP topman”.
