Everton could be set to bring back a former club captain from one of the most successful periods in their history.
It has been a summer of change for the David Moyes’ side, who saw several players leave following the expiration of their contracts.
There were a number of exciting incomings too though, with Jack Grealish joining on loan from Manchester City, along with the permanent signings of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Tyler Dibling.
Last week (13 September), Football Insider exclusively revealed that former Brighton technical director David Weir is close to rejoining Everton as part of their recruitment team.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – was in charge while Weir was captain, and believes it was the Toffees’ most successful period this century.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Weir was a top negotiator, even during his playing days, and had earned his respect for his preparation and intelligence.
The Scotsman spent eight years at the Merseyside club as a player, between 1999 and 2007, before returning in 2012 to begin his coaching career.

As Weir closes in on a third spell at Everton, Wyness added that the 55-year-old has done really well at Brighton, who have some of the very best recruitment in the country.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “David was captain of the team when I was there, and it was probably the most successful period of Everton’s history this century.
When I used to have to negotiate with the team captain, the team bonuses before the season every year, I’d seen some of the captains come, perhaps not being quite so well prepared.
“David had done a really thorough preparation, came prepared for the negotiation, and did a great job on behalf of his team.
“He’s obviously done really well at Brighton.
Brighton, as we all know, have been recognised as doing some of the very best recruitment and planning in the country.”
Meanwhile, Howard Webb and the PGMOL must introduce a new system for added time after Everton were beaten 2-1 by rivals Liverpool.
That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official, Keith Hackett, who claims that the Toffees should feel disappointed after only three extra minutes of stoppage time were added on at the end of the game.
Once the full-time whistle sounded, the referee was then surrounded by several players, including Grealish, who picked up a yellow card for his protests on the pitch.

Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Dewsbury-Hall all picked up cautions in the second half, which should’ve resulted in more added time as Everton searched for a late equaliser.
