Malick Fofana has addressed rumours regarding his Lyon future as he continues to be linked with a move to Everton.

The Belgian winger enjoyed a breakout 2024/25 campaign, registering 11 goals and five assists across all competitions as Lyon finished sixth and reached the Europa League quarter-finals.

Fofana is understood to have his heart set on a Champions League side as his next move, and the winger exclusively told Football Insider in April that he was aware of Liverpool and Arsenal interest.

However, both clubs seem to be targeting Real Madrid star Rodrygo, meaning Fofana must likely look elsewhere if he’s to move to the Premier League.

Fofana played a key role in Lyon’s victory away at Lens in Ligue 1 on Saturday, assisting Georges Mikautadze for the game’s only goal.

After that match, the 20-year-old was questioned about his Lyon future, admitting ‘anything can happen’ in football and that he would leave for a ‘good opportunity’.

“If I stay at OL?

Trick question,” Fofana responded (Liverpool Echo, 17 August).

“In football, anything can happen.

It’s not that I want to leave, but if we have a good opportunity, we’ll see.”

Fofana’s comments come as Everton insider and former club employee Alan Myers once again confirmed the Toffees ‘do hold a strong interest’ in the player.

Alongside Fofana, Everton have been battling hard to sign Southampton talent Tyler Dibling, and the club’s former CEO, Keith Wyness, exclusively told Football Insider that he still expects that deal to get done.

Fofana may have his eye on a Champions League move — especially after registering six goals and an assist in 10 Europa League outings last season.

But for now, attention from that calibre of club seems to be elsewhere.

However, the Everton project would be a great one for the young winger.

The Toffees have just moved into a stunning new stadium on the banks of the River Mersey, and improved drastically in the second half of last season following David Moyes’ return.

Everton — who begin their Premier League campaign away at Leeds on Monday — have been busy already in the summer market, signing the likes of Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish.

But even with the latter’s arrival, the Toffees remain light in the winger department, with Grealish joining Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil as the club’s only senior wingers.

There will be opportunities aplenty for Fofana at Everton, in a team steadily improving following a lean period and with a track record of selling to Champions League clubs.

Everton could be just the ‘good opportunity’ Fofana is looking for.
