Jordan Pickford’s new Everton contract could be set to have a surprising element to it with the Toffees now having opened talks around an extension to his current deal.

Jordan Pickford is a modern-day Everton legend for his impressive goalkeeping exploits at the club over the last eight years since a 2017 move from Sunderland.

Pickford has been the Toffees and England’s number one keeper for a number of years, and he has enjoyed some of the best form of his career so far in recent seasons, with 13 and 12 league clean sheets in the previous two campaigns respectively.

Reports recently emerged that Everton were set to begin formal talks with Pickford over a new contract, with his current deal on Merseyside set to expire in July 2027.

Those discussions are now seemingly underway after his and the Toffees’ strong starts to the 2025-26 season, but fresh details about his potential new deal will come as a surprise to many fans and neutrals alike.

A new report from talkSPORT states that Everton have now opened contract talks with Pickford as they look to extend his stay on Merseyside, but no official offer has been made yet with talks at an early and informal stage.

Owners the Friedkin Group are believed to be intent on extending his contract for at least another two years, but the club plan to stick to their current wage structure, meaning he may not receive a significant increase on his current £120,000 weekly wages.

They are, however, reportedly willing to offer him an incentive-driven deal that could become more lucrative if the Toffees qualify for Europe, with David Moyes’ side currently sitting sixth in the top-flight after four games.

Pickford has established himself as one of the Toffees’ best players in the modern Premier League era since he joined the club in 2017, but their good form so far this season has also been headed by other players, rather than in seasons gone by when he has been a clear standout.

He is not alone in being an important player for Moyes now, with the likes of James Tarkowski and Idrissa Gueye also playing huge respective parts in their upturn in fortunes during the second-half of last season, which has carried over into the new campaign.

Everton are planning to hand new deals to Tarkowski, James Garner and Vitaly Mykolenko as it stands, as well as Pickford, but Gueye also deserves to stay longer than this season given his consistent quality and standout experience at 35-years-old.

Dwight McNeil is another who should be handed a new deal, with his current contract set to expire in 2027 like Pickford’s, and if his and Gueye’s futures are sorted out soon, then Everton can start to look forward with renewed optimism of becoming a force in the top-flight once again.
