Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jarrad Branthwaite gave Everton a 2-0 win against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Branthwaite's goal had the Blues 1-0 up at the break, with Liverpool missing chances through Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. Calvert-Lewin thought he'd won Everton a penalty in the early doors, only to be flagged offside after Alisson's foul.

But he'd get a second midway through the second half to secure a famous derby win for the Toffees.

EVERTON: Pickford; Godfrey, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Harrison, Gueye, Douocure, Garner, McNeil; Calvert-Lewin.

Subs: Virgínia, Keane, Onana, Danjuma, Young, Gomes, Chermiti, Warrington, Hunt

LIVERPOOL: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Jones; Salah, Nunez, Diaz.

Jurgen Klopp says sorry

The Liverpool boss has been speaking to Sky Sports....

A lot must happen. They must come into a bad moment, Arsenal and City. I didn't look like that yesterday. I can only apologise for today, to the people and everybody who is with us knows how hard it is for us as well. We should have done better but we didn’t and that is why we lost.

The Paul Gorst verdict

"Inside the blue-hot cauldron of Goodison Park, Liverpool's Premier League title dreams all but melted to ash.

"And the worst thing about it all for those in the away end was how accurate their jubilant counterparts' summary of it all was as the clock ebbed into the final seconds."

It's the Paul Gorst verdict on a very difficult night for the Reds.

Everton supporters are wrong with Liverpool chant as next manager truth still clear

“You lost the league at Goodison Park” sang the home crowd as the final stages were played out with the realisation having long been clear that Liverpool, for the third time in five games, were simply never going to score.

"That chant, of course, is not strictly true. Instead, this is a title challenge that has slowly ebbed away ever since Liverpool returned from the international break a month ago, the monumental efforts of a new-look team to continue challenging for a quadruple amid a relentless injury crisis ultimately catching up with them."

Ian Doyle has written an on-the-whistle talking point after Liverpool's sorry defeat to Everton.

Virgil van Dijk reacts

Virgil van Dijk, the Liverpool captain, has been reacting to his side's Merseyside derby defeat.

Listen, very disappointed in so many ways and I think everyone has to look at themselves in the mirror and look at their performances and if they really gave everything and do they really want to win the league. We are still fighting and still have games after tonight, but if we play like we did overall in the game like today, not winning challenges and giving the ref an opportunity to give free-kicks like he did many times, we have no chance to win the title. It’s a tough one and obviously we have to do much better against a side who is fighting against relegation. We have to focus on the 12:30 kick-off again.

The Joe Thomas verdict

"This was not just a win, it was an exorcism. It was the night a tormented fanbase banished some of its most spiteful ghosts."

The Joe Thomas verdict on Everton's incredible 2-0 win over Liverpool is in - and it is an absolute must-read for Blues.

Jamie Carragher verdict

In terms of wanting it more, it’s Everton’s night. It’s not been easy and you have seen their record in derby games so you have to accept that as a Liverpool fan. This is the end of the title run for Liverpool. It almost feels like the end. They just have to make sure they finish the season strong. They had enough chances in the game. At the moment, they are not clinical enough in both boxes. I don’t think it’s the time to get too angry with the team and Jurgen Klopp. It’s been a great ride, a great journey, but tonight is Everton’s night and you have to take it on the chin.

Brilliant Dominic Calvert-Lewin answer

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, one of Everton's goalscoring heroes, has been asked in his Sky Sports interview whether Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager who scored the last time the Blues beat Liverpool at Goodison Park. This was his response...

He’s not anymore (an Everton player) is he. We won tonight. Calvert-Lewin was the goal-scorer and Jarrad Branthwaite. Will we look to kick on from that and put all those records to bed and continue to win more derbies.

Everton player ratings

Well, Chris Beesley is not messing about tonight! 3 10s and the rest 9s! But can you blame him? Certainly not after a wonderful, wonderful night for Everton.

Ratings are in

The Ian Doyle player ratings are in. They don't make for good reading.

Alisson Becker 7

Good save from Calvert-Lewin from close range and a little unfortunate to concede opener. Stopped McNeil effort second half and couldn’t do much about second.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 5

A few too many ambitious passes before the break but at least looked to get Liverpool going. Second half more of same but fell asleep for second goal. Subbed.

Ibrahima Konate 3

Nightmare first half for the Frenchman, who was bullied by Calvert-Lewin and got in the way to set up Everton opener. Instantly gave ball away at start of second half. Subbed.

Full time: Everton 2-0 Liverpool

The Reds' title hopes are surely now done for. A chastening night where they are paid for being nowhere near it. The same story for the last month. The lack of intensity at the start of games is glaring and Klopp must take some flak for not being able to fix a season-long issue.

Full-time

The home fans chant: "You lost the league at Goodison Park."

Everton have a richly-deserved first Merseyside Derby victory on home turf since 2010.

Additional time

Five minutes additional time.

It's telling that there was more in the first half.

Goodison Park is bouncing right now.

Pickford to the rescue

Another great save from Pickford when called upon.

The Everton goalkeeper tips a shot over the bar from Elliott.

Garner brought down

Endo has been brought on, seemingly to share the burden with Mac Allister of chopping down Everton players.

The Japanese international dangles a leg and fells James Garner just outside the area.

Everton still full of energy

Everton's players have given everything tonight but they're still full of energy.

Playing off the emotion being generated from the fans in the stands at Goodison Park, they're throwing themselves into everything.

Not this time

So Liverpool's title hopes are now over, barring something very strange in the last nine or so minutes.

This result will hurt but the reality is this has been a season of big steps, promise and of course a trophy.

They have looked a tired team for a while now and you can't afford to do that in the derby in particular.

No closer to scoring

Into the final 10 minutes, Liverpool looking no closer to reducing their deficit. The Reds are surely heading for a low point in their campaign.

Everton change

Idrissa Gueye, who has been excellent, is replaced by Amadou Onana. Fresh legs are important here for Everton as Liverpool are dominating the ball as they seek a way back into this game. Fifteen minutes left for this side to hold onto history.

Diaz chance

Diaz strikes inside of the post. Deserved better, he's been the only one who has been at the right level tonight. Liverpool simply haven't tested Ashley Young at left-back since he came on, Salah has been on the peripheral. Into the final 20 minutes...

Branthwaite header

The flag went up for offside but Jarrad Branthwaite wasn't to know at the time.

The young Everton centre-back almost had a second goal but nodded wide from close range from a Tarkowski flick-on. The Blues continue to look dangerous from set-pieces.

Something truly great needed

This would be one of the truly great derby comebacks if Liverpool could do it. They haven't looked likely at all. This will be painful for those in the away end.

McNeil denied

Everton break well and Harrison's effort is blocked.

The ball falls to McNeil but as the wholly left-footed players shapes to get it on his favoured side, Jarell Quansah, who has just come on for Liverpool, blocks his effort.

Subs

Endo, Elliott and Quansah on for Jones, Szoboszlai and Konate.

Let's see how this impacts things. No-one can argue with their withdrawal.

Pickford waves his finger

Everton keep their shape to deal with another Liverpool corner.

Nunez scuffs a shot at full stretch and Pickford gathers. The goalkeeper waves his finger defiantly as he goes to rally the Blues troops.

GOAL: 2-0 (Calvert-Lewin)

Everton's number nine heads in at the back post.

Calvert-Lewin meets McNeil's corner like Duncan Ferguson did here in a Derby almost 30 years ago.

McNeil tests Alisson

Dwight McNeil and his 'paintbrush' got their eye in on Sunday in front of the Gwladys Street.

Now the Everton winger tests Alisson from distance but the Brazilian palms his effort away for a corner.

Doucoure burst

A terrific run down the left from Doucoure.

The midfielder sends Alexander-Arnold 'for a copy of the ECHO' as he skips past him and cuts inside.

He then rides another challenge before laying the ball off to Harrison but unfortunately for Everton, they can't find a finishing touch to an impressive move.

Diaz excellent

Luis Diaz has carried the fight to Everton all game here, he is the only one playing at the level required. Constantly running at Everton and causing problems. Should have scored, mind.

Ambitious from Calvert-Lewin

After being pegged back for several minutes, Everton get a counter-attack.

Calvert-Lewin breaks free and has Doucoure to his left and Harrison to his right but instead he tries to beat Alisson with a shot from just inside the Liverpool half.

It was an ambitious effort but never looked close to coming off.

Better from Liverpool

This has been a good start from the Reds, who have a bit more poise and energy to their game.
