Everton’s historical issues could prove critical in their bid to get a deal for Jack Grealish over the finish line in the upcoming weeks.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson argued that Everton’s historic FFP and PSR issues could hamper their attempt to sign Grealish.

Grealish is firmly on the outer at Man City and has been backed to complete a “heavily subsidised” move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer, with Everton unable to pay his £300,000 weekly wages alone.

Everton have spent just over £50million this summer and have launched a £40m bid for Southampton’s Tyler Dibling this month, but David Moyes has grown frustrated at their lack of transfer activity thus far.

Financial sins of the past could come back to haunt the Toffees in their pursuit, as Robinson told Football Insider that other clubs could beat Everton to Grealish’s signature due to his wage demands at Man City.

Robinson sold Football Insider that other interested clubs such as West Ham and Tottenham can pay a higher portion of Grealish’s wage packet than Everton, potentially leaving them at the back of the queue.

This article contains exclusive comment from Paul Robinson, a football pundit and former England, Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United goalkeeper.

Man City are expected to pay up to £150,000 of Grealish’s weekly wages regardless of where he heads this summer, but Pep Guardiola’s side will reduce that figure if an interested proves they can pay more.

Speaking on the latest Inside Track, Robinson argued that this stance leaves Everton at a significant disadvantage in the race to sign Grealish, and it remains to be seen if the Toffees will stay in the hunt.

“Manchester City would have to subsidise [Grealish’s] wages for him to go to Everton”, Robinson told Football Insider.

“I think that may be what puts Everton slightly down the pecking order.

“There’ll be a lot of Premier League clubs looking at Jack Grealish, and there’ll be Premier League clubs that can pay a bigger chunk – maybe not all – of his wages.

“For Everton, I do wonder with their FFP and PSR, whether they can get near what other clubs would offer financially as a wage package for him.”

Although Everton are yet to agree a fee with City for Grealish this summer, former CEO Keith Wyness has backed the England winger to be a success on Merseyside if he does complete a move to Moyes’ side.

Competition for Everton could also arrive in the form of Napoli if Grealish chooses to follow the path laid by Kevin De Bruyne, with Man City keen to get the 29-year-old off the books by any means this summer.

Grealish’s future is in his own hands with moves to Tottenham, West Ham and Everton all on the cards, but it’s unclear if the latter still have the finances and pulling power to secure the City star’s signature.
