Compared with some of their rivals, Liverpool have never been especially huge spenders in the transfer market.

That isn’t to say that the Reds don’t spend money; one glance through their current squad of players will put that theory to bed.

But where the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have regularly revised their transfer records, Liverpool have not often done the same.

That is set to change in the coming days, as Florian Wirtz finalises a move from Bayer Leverkusen.

There have been good moments, and a Premier League title to boot, but it will be a relief to see Wirtz take this particular crown from Nunez’s head.

When Virgil van Dijk was signed in January 2018, it was the first time Liverpool had ever spent serious, serious money on a deal.

Nevertheless, plenty still scoffed at the £75m the Reds paid Southampton for the centre-back.

Seven years on, and Van Dijk is arguably the greatest centre-back the Premier League has ever seen.

This was an absolutely robbery as it turned out.

Liverpool paid RB Leipzig at least £48m to sign Naby Keita one year ahead of time in the summer of 2017, even adding a premium on top to secure his arrival in 2018.

Although plenty was expected of Keita, and he contributed to some big trophies during his time at Anfield, his five-year stay was ultimately one of disappointment.

Injuries largely robbed Liverpool of what could have been the answer to their midfield prayers, leaving Keita to go down as one of the poorer transfers of the Jurgen Klopp era.

By the time Liverpool had forked out on Keita, Michael Edwards was getting very good at this transfer business.

But before Edwards was given control, Liverpool were a little bit all over the place.

The £35m deal which saw Andy Carroll signed from Newcastle on deadline day in January 2011 is among the worst in the club’s history.

Carroll’s arrival for such a big sum owed plenty to the man who preceded him as Liverpool’s record signing: Fernando Torres.

Torres joined Chelsea for £50m on the same day Carroll rocked up at Anfield and the Spaniard is likely to remain the only player on this list who earns Liverpool a profit.

The £20m spent to sign Torres from Atletico Madrid in 2007 was a huge deal for the Reds at the time, but turned out to be one of their most exciting signings of all-time.

Cisse was bought from Auxerre by Gerard Houllier in 2004, before the Frenchman knew he was getting the sack.

Rafael Benitez was a fan of Cisse, though, and was happy to see the £14m transfer go through upon succeeding Houllier in the dugout.

Like Keita almost 15 years after him, Cisse’s time at Liverpool was wrecked by injury.

But the striker still enjoyed his time at Anfield nonetheless, contributing heavily to Champions League and FA Cup wins before leaving in 2007.

Liverpool’s first record signing of the 21st century was the one and only Emile Heskey, who arrived before transfer windows were even a thing, back in March 2000.

Joining from Leicester City for £11m, much was expected of Heskey, who went on to play his part in the treble winning season in 2000/01.

Heskey stayed with the Reds for three more years, before leaving along with Michael Owen as Benitez ushered in a new era in 2004.

Liverpool have come a long way over the last 25 years.
