'Every time I talked to him': Former Liverpool player says why he thinks Arne Slot is 'a strange guy'

Liverpool fans have found a new hero this season after seeing Arne Slot lead them to a 20th league title.

Slot arrived as a new head coach with plenty to prove last summer but will end his first year with the Reds as a Premier League title winner.

Having achieved so much so soon, the Dutchman has little left to prove to anyone at Anfield.

A big summer lies in wait and Slot will be judged somewhat on the new players he brings to be part of the Liverpool squad.

But for now, his status as the man who brought number 20 home cannot be diminished.

He has written himself into Liverpool history already.

One man who knows Slot well is former teammate and one-time Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld.

But although the two are seemingly friends, Westerveld has admitted that there has been something ‘strange’ about Slot this season.

Part of the reason for Slot’s early success at Liverpool has been how he has taken everything in his stride.

Despite having never managed outside of the Netherlands prior to this season, the 46-year-old did not seem fazed at all.

Slot was not bothered about stepping into the shoes left by the legendary Jurgen Klopp and instead rose to the challenge without issue.

And according to Westerveld, in conversations between the two of them, Slot has been keen to downplay any and every milestone moment at Liverpool.

“He was really looking forward to joining, of course, but he is a strange guy in that he downplays everything,” the Dutchman tells the Liverpool ECHO while looking back on Slot’s Anfield arrival.

“Every time I talked to him, it was like: ‘Ah, you’re making your debut at Anfield, are you excited?’ and he was sort of like replying, saying ‘yeah, you know, I have been in front of 50,000 people before at Feyenoord’.

No, no, this is not the same.”

What Westerveld is saying about Slot certainly rings true from his public interactions this season.

The former Feyenoord boss has been keen to play down the size of the job he has done at Liverpool.

But after having such an emotional manager in Klopp, Slot’s calmness and unflappability has been exactly what the Reds needed.

A different personality to the Liverpool head coach could have easily buckled at the prospect of managing a club the size of Liverpool after a personality as big as Klopp.

But that Slot saw it all as just another day at the office has surely been of benefit to the Reds.

Now that he’s been able to match that nonchalant attitude with winning the biggest title of all, he should have no hesitation in employing the same approach next season and into the future.
