Jamie Carragher believes the title is "slipping away" from Liverpool and thinks his former club will be concerned about missing out on the top four after losing to Burnley.

The Premier League champions were beaten 1-0 at Anfield on Thursday night, bringing an end to their 68-game unbeaten run at home.

It means that Liverpool are now winless in five Premier League matches and haven't scored a league goal in 2021.

To make matters worse, Liverpool are now four points behind Manchester City and six adrift of league leaders Manchester United, having played a game more than Pep Guardiola's side.

With Tottenham and Everton able to jump above Liverpool, in fourth, if they win their games in hand, Carragher believes chances of retaining the title are waning and the club may even be concerned about qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

Here is everything the Liverpool legend said on Sky Sports after last night's defeat.

On the title race

"We’re talking about a blip for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp has come out and defended his players as you’d expect, and these players have done so much for Liverpool. But at this moment, they look like the title is slipping away. You think it’s going to be really difficult.

"At this moment, yes, it looks like six points from the top, that can still be recovered, the fixtures they have in the next couple of months. I think Liverpool in the next couple of weeks will start worrying about the top four position rather than the title.

"They need to get back to winning games, scoring goals. He’s got a lot to ponder, you can’t quite believe what’s happened to Liverpool in the last few weeks. You go from that 7-0 win over Palace, so many players out of form at the same time. There’s so many teams this season that are challenging for the top four, that will be a concern for Liverpool until they get out of this poor form."

On Liverpool's lack of confidence

"Every game you come to now with Liverpool, you’re just waiting for them to click into gear because you’ve seen it so often over the last three or so years under Klopp how good this team is. I thought it would happen against United and tonight, and in both games, they start nice and bright, passing it around the edge of the box without creating too much and you think it’s something to build on.

"But they seem to lose confidence and belief so quickly that they can score a goal, it’s almost like they feel they need to score in the first half an hour. Normally the great teams, and this Liverpool team in the last few years, score plenty of late goals, but it feels as if their belief goes.

"You don’t see how Liverpool can score goals, really. Notoriously, the top teams open teams up towards the bottom of the table as they tire and spaces get bigger, but as I said, I can’t remember a time where this Liverpool team have been so out of form with this many players at the same time.

"You think of the front three and the two full-backs for providing the quality and assists, all five of them at this moment don’t feel like they’re any way near their best. Not just scoring, I’m talking about general play, even when Salah comes on, you feel like he’s going come on and add some freshness. Three or four times he gets one vs one against the left-back and runs straight into him. Firmino’s chance when he comes on. I think it’s the most crosses Trent has ever put in, in a game, in his life.

"I think Liverpool supporters will be massively frustrated, this team has done something to this club that hasn’t been done in a long time, brought the title back, and they’ll always be legends for doing that, but as Graeme Souness just mentioned, they kept that standard every year and now, to be fair to this team, they have over the last three years.

"Champions League final, Champions League winners, getting almost 100 points and last year, winning the league. For whatever reason, this season, it’s not just dropped off - it’s massively dropped off in the last five games, really.

"It’s a huge worry going forward, not just in terms of the title, but for the top four positions. There’s so many teams that will fancy their chances this season in terms of that goal and at this moment Liverpool are massively out of form and have a really difficult run of fixtures. If they don’t go well, they’ll be completely out of the title race by then, by the middle of February, the end of February.

"If that happens, Liverpool will be fighting for their lives to get in the Champions League next season."

On Jurgen Klopp's role in Liverpool's injuries and how to close the gap at the top

"He’s changed it up tonight, hasn’t he, and we know there’s been a big drop off in the back-up players, certainly in the attacking areas, hence why Liverpool’s front three play so often.

"I think Diogo Jota has been a huge miss for Liverpool, if you look at the players and the manager and the teams he picks at certain times, and the fact that he played in a dead rubber in the Champions League - there’s frustration he got injured in that game. Liverpool wrapped the Champions League up early and then lost one of their key players - certainly at the start of the season - in a game that didn’t matter too much.

"They also put a very strong team out against virtually Aston Villa’s youth team, so that means that Salah and Firmino are on the bench.

"Everyone at this moment is going to have questions thrown at them and no-one ever gets it perfectly right, even when they’re at their absolute best. But at this moment, this Liverpool side are a shadow of what they’ve been in the last three or four years.

"Normally after three or four years, there’s almost a moving on. I mentioned about Roberto Firmino on Monday Night Football and very rarely do you see the same players playing week in and week out. You actually go back to the Champions League final that Liverpool lost to Madrid, if you look at Liverpool’s team that night, it’s still the team today, really, with one or two exceptions.

"Certainly the 10 outfield players, apart from Fabinho coming in, but it’s still the same front three, it’s still the same back four, virtually, it’s still Wijnaldum and Henderson, so there’s only been one addition, really, who you’d say is a nailed on start when everyone’s fit out of the 10 outfield players.

"That shows how much these players have done for Liverpool over the past few years with the intensity they play at and between now and the end of the season, they need to make sure they get Champions League qualification before they think of anything else and then see what the club and the manager do in the summer.

"There will be frustration for the supporters as it looks like it’s slipping away, but there’s still half a season to go. This team has been described as mentality monsters by the manager and it’s a fitting description given what they’ve done, but they’ve got to show it and more in the second half of the season if they want to claw that deficit to the two Manchester clubs back now."
