New Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz has spoken about the role Arne Slot and Richard Hughes played in his move to the club.
After weeks of speculation and steady updates, Wirtz was announced as a Liverpool player on Friday.
The 22-year-old arrived in the UK on Thursday.
He completed his medical on Friday and was unveiled as a new Liverpool player on Friday evening.
“Liverpool FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen,” a club statement read.
Wirtz will earn approximately £200,000 per week plus bonuses at Anfield.
The German star chose Liverpool despite reportedly being offered higher wages by Bayern Munich, who were also pursuing his signature alongside Manchester City.
Speaking to the club’s official website after completing his deal, Wirtz revealed the role head coach Arne Slot and the club’s sporting director Richard Hughes played in his move.
Asked about his conversation with the Liverpool coach, the 22-year-old said:
“The conversations were always really good.
He was just telling me that I’m a player he really wants to have in his team and can bring the team a step forward.
I just could imagine it [being] good to be in the team and to make it better because I have to make my performances every week – but I’m here for this.”
When asked why he chose Liverpool over other interested clubs, Wirtz also mentioned Liverpool’s staff members as one reason he joined.
“I just thought that it was the right point in my career to make the next step and of course I wanted to get to a club that is from the top three in the world, and in my opinion Liverpool was one of them.
“Yeah, I just saw myself in the best hands in Liverpool.
And in the end [it was] also easy to be excited for me to come to Liverpool.”
Asked if his decision to join Liverpool was an easy one, Wirtz also revealed that talks with Slot and Hughes, helped him decide.
“Yeah, it was not that easy for me, for sure, because I am a German player, I play for the Germany national team,” he revealed.
“So, it was not easy for me to decide but I think the talks with the coach and Richard [Hughes] and everybody were, from the start or from the very first time, so good and it just kept going like this?
Every time I spoke to one of the [people from] the club I felt like, ‘this is the place I want to be’ and so in the end I was really 100 per cent convinced I want to join Liverpool and it was the best choice.”
