Barca, in shipping four unanswered goals to Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum, wrote “the darkest page” of a glorious club chronicle which also features 26 Spanish title wins and five European Cups.

“In fact, during the technical chat a player said to us ‘boss, how we are going to lose today?’ and Valverde said to him ‘I am the manager, I have to put myself in all the situations’.

In some respects it seems Barcelona have never recovered from the mauling they suffered at the hands of Liverpool that day with Valverde’s former assistant Aspiazu admitting that he could feel the “fear” in the camp ahead of the match.

“The match in Liverpool was much more even than the final result reflected.
