Former Liverpool Women manager Matt Beard has died at the age of 47.

Beard took charge of two spells with the Women’s Super League side, leading them to back-to-back titles in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

He returned in May 2021 to oversee the Reds’ promotion back to the top flight at a first time of asking, winning the Championship by an 11-point margin.

The Reds parted company with Beard in February following a run of four WSL wins in 14 games despite also reaching the Women’s FA Cup quarter finals.

Away from Merseyside, he had stints with Millwall, Chelsea, Boston Breakers, Bristol City and Burnley prior to news of his sudden passing on Saturday.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Matt’s family and friends at this devastating time,” read a club statement.

“Matt was not only an extremely committed and successful manager, he was also a person of real integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness by everyone he worked with at the club.”
