The campaign promised far greater glory at one point, but even though that has all fallen away in the last few weeks, it's still been an excellent year for a number of players.

Collectively, the whole team has at the very least met pre-season expectations, and probably surpassed them.

Chelsea has attempted a similar transformation, and has required a late surge just to avoid missing out altogether on any kind of European football for a second season running.

Of course, Liverpool has not flushed out the old guard quite so drastically.

The average age of Klopp's starting XIs has been a full two years older than Chelsea's — and there have been significant performances from some of the team's veterans, including Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

Neither would spring to mind in the player of the season conversation based on the last few weeks, but over the season as a whole, both have emerged as key performers at times.

A former Liverpool goalkeeper has named Salah as one of his two candidates:

"It's tough to look past Mo Salah in terms of Liverpool's player of the season," Ádám Bogdán exclusively told Ladbrokes Fanzone.

"You can't really say Alisson, because he's missed so much of the season; you can't really say Caoimhín Kelleher, because he's not played enough."

Sure enough, Salah has a strong case to once again claim the award.

He's had a great season, so if I had to say someone other than Salah, it would be him.
