It is often hard to make your mark after moving club at such a young age.
Many players have left Liverpool in the past, some have gone on to achieve great success, whilst others have struggled.
The opportunity to find regular first-team football and develop as a player is a goal for many young players, who maybe can’t visualise themselves making it at a club as big as Liverpool.
Some do make it through Liverpool’s academy and instantly make an impact on the senior team like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott but the odds of that are slim, and many look elsewhere to build their career.
Liverpool oversaw several departures last summer and 21-year-old winger Harvey Blair was one of the players to exit the club.
The young winger made just one professional appearance for the Reds, with that appearance coming against Preston North End in the EFL Cup on 27th October 2021.
He joined Portsmouth in August 2024 for £300,000 on an initial three-year deal with the sale potentially rising to £600,000 if certain conditions were met.
Blair made his debut for his new club one day later, coming on as substitute in their 2-2 draw away at Middlesborough.
However, Harvey Blair’s first season on the south coast after departing Liverpool has been a challenging one.
Hampered by injuries and selection issues, he hasn’t yet progressed in the way he would’ve liked at Portsmouth, limited to just 12 appearances and three starts.
He has now suffered another injury, as he was forced off in Portsmouth’s game against Hull today in just the 16th minute.
The injury will come at a frustrating time for Blair, as he was finally starting to show progress before this new setback.
A five-month absence from the first team came to an end at the beginning of April as he came off the bench against Millwall.
He then featured against Derby County, before he was given his first start against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.
The faith shown in Blair by manager John Mousinho was rewarded after he netted his first goal for the club in Portsmouth’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.
He was then given his first home start against Hull today but has suffered an injury after a heavy challenge from a Hull’s Sean McLoughlin.
Harvey Blair received treatment on the pitch but was unable to continue, and the current extent on the injury is unknown.
A tough blow for the young man, but he will be looking to recover in time to have a big pre-season in an effort to have a more successful season next year at Portsmouth.
