Ex-PMGOL chief drops Norwich City appeal verdict after analysing Jacob Wright footage

Mon 25 August 2025 16:41, UK

Jacob Wright was “slightly unlucky” to be sent off for his challenge on Aidan Morris as Norwich City lost to Middlesbrough, according to Keith Hackett.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that, while the former Man City man could have received a yellow card for his challenge, the Canaries are unlikely to win any appeal.

Despite Josh Sargent netting his third goal of the season in the closing stages, Boro were able to claim all three points at Carrow Road thanks to goals from Finn Azaz and Tommy Conway on Saturday, 23 August.

Liam Manning’s side were clearly at a disadvantage after the 58th minute as Wright saw a straight red card for his challenge on Morris, catching his opponent high on the shin with studs showing.

This article contains exclusive comments from ex-PGMOL chief, FIFA official and former professional referee Keith Hackett.

While Hackett was disappointed for the young midfielder, he admitted that any appeal against the red card was unlikely, meaning he will miss the Canaries’ away clash against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, 30 August.

The 19-year-old made 15 appearances while on loan at Carrow Road last season, with his move being made permanent over the summer before slotting straight into the starting lineup.

However, it is clear that Wright, much like his former Man City teammate Divin Mubama, who was sent off for Stoke City recently, has a lot to learn after being sent off against Boro.

Hackett spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the incident, saying: “I think it’s reckless with excessive force, but I don’t think it’s serious foul play.

What hasn’t helped is the reaction of the players around.

“Their reactions scream that this is a red-card challenge, but for me, I think the player is slightly unlucky, but it’s how he goes into the challenge, off the ground.

“I don’t think they’ve got any avenue for an appeal, Norwich City.

I can understand why the referee has given a red.

But it’s got a degree of subjectivity.

“Now that I’ve thought about it, I think the referee is in a great position to make the judgment.

I still think the player has been unlucky and might have received a yellow.

“However, the referee has seen excessive force; the boot is higher than I thought it was.

It’s shin-high rather than boot-high, and I think with the reaction of the players, the referee has probably got it right.”
