Real Madrid fans are known for their high expectations and Trent Alexander-Arnold has been told he'll need to maintain his performance levels on a consistent basis in order to avoid their wrath.

The Liverpool full-back, who confirmed his departure from the Reds on Monday, is now poised to move to Madrid in the summer, bringing a 20-year association with his boyhood club to an end.

While hailed as a generational talent, Alexander-Arnold's capacity in defence has often been scrutinised.

And ex-Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit, who won the Premier League title in 1998, has claimed that the Madrid faithful will not be as forgiving as those at Anfield if there are any slip-ups in his game.

"It's a mess at Real Madrid and if you have one or two bad games, you get killed by the fans," Petit told SambaSlots.

He will now depart having won two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup, reports the Mirror.

Former Barcelona ace Petit has expressed bewilderment at Alexander-Arnold's decision to leave, given the Reds’ recent triumphs and Madrid's current woes.

Like some hopeful Liverpool fans, Petit was also sure Alexander-Arnold's euphoric celebration against Leicester, on the way to the Reds claiming their 20th top-flight title, was evidence that he was perhaps staying put on Merseyside.

"Trent Alexander-Arnold is an icon, a legend at Liverpool and his celebration against Leicester a few weeks ago was brilliant," said Petit.

"It made me think he could stay at the club, especially after seeing Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk signing new deals.

"My advice to Alexander-Arnold would be that he has won the Premier League again with Liverpool.

He will always compete for the Champions League with Liverpool, so why would you want to go and join Real Madrid in their current state?"

Despite such words of counsel, Alexander-Arnold's exit is now inevitable.

In a statement earlier this week he said: "After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season.

From the Academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever.
