Newcastle finally gave Alexander Isak the green light to join Liverpool after failing to negotiate a new contract with the striker.

Liverpool are set to end the transfer saga of the summer, having agreed a British transfer record £125million fee for Isak in the early hours of deadline day.

The Reds rejected an initial £110million bid in early August for the 25-year-old Sweden international.



Isak has since gone on strike and publicly accused Newcastle of breaking transfer promises.

It appears Isak will now get his way despite the Magpies' best efforts to retain him.

Newcastle had publicly insisted all summer long that Isak was not for sale, and that they would not part ways with their talisman for a fee lower than £150m.

But Isak is now set for a medical with the Reds on Monday, with the deal being worth £130m to Newcastle due to solidarity payments.

He will sign a six-year contract on Merseyside, eclipsing the record Premier League fee (£116m) Liverpool splashed on Florian Wirtz earlier in the window.

It has emerged that Newcastle finally shifted their not-for-sale stance on Isak last Monday after their delegation, led by minority owner Jamie Reuben and members of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, visited the player at his home for crunch talks before Newcastle's 3-2 home defeat by Liverpool.

According to The Telegraph, they tried to persuade Isak to stay for one more season.

However, Isak refused to commit to the club for another year in reward for a new contract, which reportedly would have included a release clause that would allow him to leave for a set price in 12 months' time.

A new deal also raised the possibility that even if Newcastle kept him this summer, the Swede would agitate for a move in the January transfer window and disrupt their season again.
