The future of Darwin Nunez has remained a sticking point throughout Liverpool’s transfer window this summer.
Nunez has already hit the ground running in Liverpool’s pre-season, scoring a hat-trick against Stoke City and finding the net twice against Athletic Bilbao on Monday evening.
Earlier approaches from Napoli fizzled out amid differing valuations, while a lucrative proposal from Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal could still fall into Liverpool’s lap.
Liverpool’s firm asking price has kept other suitors at bay
It is surprising that Nunez is still at the club after Napoli showed serious interest but were not willing to meet Liverpool’s €70m valuation.
Now DaveOCKOP.com can exclusively reveal that AC Milan are expected to make a formal offer for the 26-year-old this week.
They may look for a loan with a buy obligation due to the finances of a potential deal.
Sky Sports already revealed earlier this week that the Serie A giants had contacted the Merseyside club over a transfer, and we can now reveal they are ready to firm up their interest with an offer.
However, it’s unclear if Milan would be able to pay the €65-70m valuation, with Al-Hilal in a much better position to meet the demands.
AC Milan endured a disappointing campaign last season, finishing eighth in Serie A.
With no Champions League revenue, the seven-time European champions do not have too much to work with.
Manager Sérgio Conceição departed at the end of last season, with Massimiliano Allegri stepping in as his successor, while Luka Modri? headlines their summer arrivals so far.
Núñez made 47 appearances across all competitions last season, netting seven goals, but was named in the starting XI just eight times.
The Reds have further strengthened their forward line this summer by bringing in Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Offloading Nunez would also boost Liverpool’s finances and support their ongoing pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak – who we exclusively revealed would submit a formal transfer request should his move to Anfield not accelerate.
While Nunez will likely retain some supporters who remember his crucial goals against Newcastle United in 2023/24 or his late heroics at Brentford this past season, the broader fanbase appears ready to move on.
