Aston Villa are rivalling Brentford for Borussia Dortmund forward Max Beier as they explore a last-gasp move, sources have told Football Insider.
Brentford have a long-term interest in Beier and have held talks about signing him as a replacement for Newcastle target Yoane Wissa.
Now, Villa have turned their attention to landing the 22-year-old and have made contact over a late-window deal.
The German club is still unsure about parting ways with the Beier and value him in excess of £40million.
The Germany international signed for Dortmund last summer from Hoffenheim and has a contract running until the summer of 2029.

The striker market has dominated the headlines in the Premier League this summer, and Villa are just one of many clubs looking to land a new No.9.
Unai Emery has already secured the signing of Evann Guessand from Nice, while Ollie Watkins remains the starting option at Villa Park.

But football finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider (28 August) that 29–year-old Watkins was a surprise candidate to be sold this summer, as Villa looked to raise the funds that will enable them to keep their younger talents.
While Newcastle are pushing hard to sign Wissa, there is still talk that a move for Watkins could resurface before the end of the transfer window.
Beier is primarily a centre-forward, but has played 48 times as a winger and 12 times as an attacking midfielder across the course of his career so far (Transfermarkt).
Villa recently loaned Leon Bailey to Roma, while dynamic midfielder Jacob Ramsey moved to Newcastle on a permanent basis.
Emery only has two natural wingers at his disposal at present in Samuel Iling-Junior and Donyell Malen.
Beier’s versatility would make him an attractive option for the Spanish coach, who must juggle Europa League commitments alongside a gruelling domestic campaign at Villa this season.
