Aston Villa have registered their interest in a shock move to re-sign Douglas Luiz, sources have told Football Insider.

The Midlands giants have turned their attention to bringing back the midfielder a year after he quit for Juventus.

Luiz has been strongly linked with a Premier League return just 12 months on from a £42million transfer to the Serie A giants.

Now, Villa are exploring a deal for Luiz as a replacement for potentially exit-bound John McGinn.

Newcastle have opened preliminary talks over a deal for Unai Emery’s captain as they work on strengthening their midfield.

Aston Villa’s swoop for Luiz is a surprise given he has had such a disappointing year in Italy, following his move from the Midlands.

Last season, the 27-year-old started just three Serie A games for Juventus, featuring for only 516 minutes in total across the league campaign.

If Villa are to agree a deal for Luiz, Emery will hope that the Brazilian is able to rediscover the brilliant form he had during his last spell at the club.

There are a number of other Premier League sides also linked with the Juventus midfielder, with the likes of Everton, West Ham, Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest in the race for his signature.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have received a financial boost after a £120million loss has dropped out of their profit and sustainability (PSR) calculations, sources have told Football Insider.

The West Midlands giants have faced PSR issues over the past couple of seasons as they look to close the gap on the top clubs.

Emery’s side have been hampered by their £120m loss for 2022-23, having been forced to balance the books.

However, that heavy loss dropped out of Villa’s three-year PSR calculation from 1 July onwards following the start of their new accounting year.
