Liverpool aim to sign at least one centre-back before the September 1 deadline.
With Jarell Quansah sold to Bayer Leverkusen and Joe Gomez sidelined by an Achilles injury, only Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate – who has one year left on his contract, were available for the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace.
The Reds are interested in Palace captain Marc Guehi, who is in the final year of his deal and may be sold this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer.
Palace chairman Steve Parish said: “We’d have to do that, of course.
“For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it’s a problem for us unfortunately.
“Joachim [Andersen] went [to Fulham last summer] and we couldn’t afford to lose both.
“We then had another bid [for Guehi] in January but that was a different situation.
“We’ll just have to see what happens.
But, you know, it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.”
We exclusively revealed back in March that Liverpool held talks with Marc Guehi’s representatives?
Since then we also revealed that Liverpool have reached an agreement on personal terms with the England international.
How much Liverpool are willing to pay for Marc Guehi
We can now exclusively reveal that Liverpool are willing to pay up to £30M up front for central defender.
Crystal Palace are hoping for a fee closer to £40M.
Talks are progressing between the clubs and it is believed that an agreement will be found.
