Liverpool’s need for a central defender is clear heading into the summer transfer window.
Indeed, the last time the club bought in a senior defender was Ibrahima Konate all the way back in 2021.
Joe Gomez and the emergence of Jarell Quansah has helped plaster the gap, but it’s growing clear that another senior option is needed if Arne Slot’s men want to challenge on four fronts in 2024/25.
Quansah has been attracting interest from Bayer Leverkusen with Sky Sports reporting that Bayer Leverkusen is actively engaged in talks with the England U21 international.
Liverpool have set an asking price north of £40 million for Quansah according to reports.
And DaveOCKOP can exclusively reveal that should the Anfield club sanction the sale of the 22-year-old this summer, the club have Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi high on their shortlist.
Back in March, we revealed that Liverpool had held talks with the representatives of Marc Guehi.
The Cheslea academy graduate has always been on the club’s radar, and that interest has never fully waned away.
Marc Guehi has one year remaining on his Crystal Palace contract, positioning him as a realistic – and potentially cost-effective – buy ahead of his free agency in 2026.
Palace may be open to negotiations in the £40–45 million range rather than risking a Bosman departure.
The 24-year-old England international enjoyed a strong season that culminated in captaining Palace to their first-ever FA Cup triumph in May 2025, lifting the trophy after a 1–0 win over Manchester City at Wembley.
Marc Guehi?

Securing Guehi would not only plug a potential gap created by Quansah’s sale but also improve the standard of the squad.
His familiarity with Premier League rigours make him an attractive proposition to the Liverpool hierarchy.
Another factor that places Marc Guehi in a favourable light is that he would be classed as a homegrown player – counting towards the quota required in a 25-man squad.
Chelsea has a 20% sell-on clause for Guehi following his £18 million move to the South London club in 2021.
This adds to the difficult position Palace are in regarding getting big money for their star defender.
