Many Liverpool fans can remember the club’s pursuit of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon last summer.
News suddenly emerged out of nowhere that the Reds were in for the former Everton man and talks even escalated to including the likes of Joe Gomez or Jarell Quansah as part of an informal swap deal.
Newcastle United’s openness to selling Anthony Gordon was driven primarily by their urgent need to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) ahead of the June 30 deadline that year.
Like several other top-flight clubs, Newcastle faced the real threat of points deductions for breaching PSR, which forced them to consider significant player sales to balance their books.
Negotiations with Liverpool for Gordon advanced considerably, but Newcastle ultimately decided against the transfer after finding alternative ways to meet their financial obligations.
Instead, the Magpies secured the necessary funds by selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35 million and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £30 million, thus avoiding the need to part with their star winger.
Despite the deal falling through, the episode made clear Gordon’s strong desire to join Liverpool.
Reports from the time indicated that he openly shared his excitement about a potential move to Anfield with his England teammates during Euro 2024.
It was even reported that Gordon’s “head had been turned” and that his mental state was less than perfect heading into the 2024/25 season as a result of Liverpool interest.
Now DaveOCKOP can exclusively reveal that Liverpool have remained in active contact with Anthony Gordon’s representatives since last summer.
The Anfield club are prepared to make a significant move for the Newcastle United winger if one of their current forwards departs this summer – with the likes of Federico Chiesa, Darwin Nunez, and even Luis Diaz facing less than certain futures on Merseyside.
The Reds’ interest in the England international has persisted following their failed attempt to secure his services.
Gordon maintains a close friendship with Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, whom he played alongside in England’s youth teams.
Jones was even spotted liking an Instagram post linking the 24-year-old to Anfield.
But there is expected to be competition for his signature, with Arsenal showing interest in the pacy winger as an alternative to Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams according to the Athletic.
Gordon signing a new long-term contract with Newcastle in October 2024, running until 2029.
This gives the Magpies a strong start in any potential negotiations with Michael Edwards and co.
As seen with their stance on Alexander Isak, the Geordie side does not want to part ways with any of their top players, and talks with Newcastle are expected to be difficult.
Since joining Newcastle from Everton for £45 million in January 2023, he has recorded 22 goals and 23 assists in 105 appearances.
