Liverpool are growing increasingly pessimistic over their chances of signing Marc Guehi this summer, Rousing The Kop understands.

The Reds have been locked in talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for their captain over recent weeks, with an initial offer being put forward on Saturday.

However, while the fee is not understood to be a problem in making a move happen, Palace will only sanction Guehi‘s sale if a suitable replacement is found.

With less than 12 hours to run in the summer transfer window, those hopes are beginning to dwindle.

If the Eagles are unable to bring in a player Oliver Glasner deems to be a direct replacement for Guehi, he will not be joining Liverpool.

Glasner is understood to have been putting pressure on the Palace decision-makers not to sell the centre-back, and is looking likely to get his way.

Liverpool’s failure to land Guehi is likely to have a knock-on effect at Anfield, with the sale of Joe Gomez directly linked to the transfer.

The Reds have received an offer for Gomez from AC Milan, but will not accept terms with the Italians unless Guehi arrives.

As transfer expert Graeme Bailey exclusively tells RTK on deadline day, Liverpool now believe they are set to miss out on the England international.

“Liverpool don’t think they are doing Marc Guehi as things stand,” says Bailey.

“Guehi to Liverpool is going to have to wait, from what we are now hearing from Anfield.”

“They wanted the deal, as did the player, but Oliver Glasner has seemingly won the day to keep his skipper.

Glasner’s pressure has been key.

“It does have that knock-on effect for Joe Gomez – who will be staying if nothing changes.”

Although there will be disappointment if Liverpool can not get Guehi over the line, RTK understands that he has given preference to a move to Anfield.

Nevertheless, this does not mean Liverpool are guaranteed to sign the defender once his contract ends next summer.

A January deal is currently seen as being highly unlikely, with the Reds knowing they can instead sign Guehi for nothing six months down the line.

And although Liverpool will be at the front of the queue next summer, they are likely to face competition from the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Premier League rivals.
