Premier League officials currently have no immediate intention of matching La Liga and Serie A’s plans to play games overseas, sources have told Football Insider.

Villarreal’s home match against Barcelona could become the first European league fixture to be played abroad after the Spanish football federation has approved plans to host the game in the US.

Meanwhile, AC Milan are pushing to host their Serie A match against Como in Perth, Australia, in February, but the plans require approval from Fifa, Uefa, Football Australia and the Asian Football Confederation.

The Italian and Spanish Super Cups have both been played overseas in recent years as the federations look to appeal to a wider audience.

The Premier League previously championed a proposal for a 39th league game in 2008, but a fierce backlash from fans saw the plans collapse and never resurface.

La Liga and Serie A’s moves to play matches abroad have led to speculation about whether the Premier League could soon look to follow suit.

However, sources say Premier League officials currently have no immediate intention of playing games overseas.

It is believed there is already sufficient global interest in the English top-flight and there would be little financial benefit of playing matches abroad at this moment in time.

Premier League sides have been travelling across Europe, Asia and the US as part of their pre-season plans in recent years.

Ruben Amorim’s side also travelled to Asia for their first-ever post-season tour in May, where they played ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Stadium.

It’s been another busy transfer window for Premier League clubs, with the current spending reaching close to £2billion.
