Reading rejected a deadline day offer from Lecce for young midfielder Tyler Sackey, sources have told Football Insider.

The Italian side approached the League One club about a loan deal for the 18-year-old on the final day of the transfer window.

Sources say Reading decided to keep Sackey, as he is seen as someone who can establish himself in the first team this season.

Last term, the Englishman broke into the Royals squad, making a number of appearances in the cup competitions as well as becoming a regular fixture on the bench for league games.

Sackey’s current contract with Reading expires next summer, with there yet to be any news of a potential extension to his deal.

Sources say that several clubs at home and abroad are keeping tabs on the situation and watching the young talent closely.

So far this season, Sackey has played one game for the Reading first team, starting in a 3-2 defeat to Swindon Town in the Vertu Trophy.

The teenager played 79 minutes of the contest and also grabbed a first-half assist for the Berkshire-based club.

Sackey is yet to make a league appearance for the Royals, who have had a disappointing start to their League One campaign under Noel Hunt.

Last season, Reading were in the play-off picture until the final day, losing out to Leyton Orient in the race for the final spot.

Hunt’s side were expected to mount another challenge for the top six this term, but so far they have been underwhelming and sit 20th in the table, just one place above the relegation zone.

Last time out, Hunt’s side grabbed their first league win of the season, beating Port Vale 1-0 before the international break.

The Royals will hope this can kickstart their campaign, and that they can take the momentum into their next game, as they travel to high-flyers Barnsley on Saturday (13 September).
